pregnancy #2

I was just looking back at the beginning of this blog and my first post was when I was almost 14 weeks pregnant with Jasper.  Now I am almost 14 weeks pregnant with baby #2!!  Funny timing :)

I knew immediately when I got pregnant. I could just feel it.  I felt different and I just knew.  I was going to wait until actually missing my period and I made it to 1 day before I was due to get my period.  The next day was Yom Kippor and we were supposed to fast, but I was thinking, if I'm pregnant I shouldn't fast.  So Tim said I should just go get the test and take it.  We both already knew it was positive.  As soon as I got back from CVS with the test, my sister in law and her family arrived from Connecticut.  Perfect timing.  Tim said I should go take the test and just give him the thumbs up when I get out, no-one else has to know.  So I did.  The test was positive, I came out, said hello to our guests and gave Tim a big thumbs up!!!  YAY!!!

We scheduled an ultrasound for a couple weeks later, just to make sure things were developing properly.  We had another appointment with the midwife at 10 weeks where we got to hear the baby's heartbeat.  Reilly and Jasper were with us and got to hear it too and that was really cool.  Every day now Jasper asks me if my belly is big yet.  We told our families at Thanksgiving.  The boys got great new shirts to display to the family :)

Happy big brothers!!!

We're due June 16, 2012!!  And this baby will be know as "Piglet" until he/she is born :)

new developements?

Time keeps passing so quickly and I keep thinking how nice it would be for me to sit down and write some thoughts or observations to help me remember what's going on.  For some reason I rarely actually do it.  I've always loved being able to look back, at either pictures or journals to remind me of where I've been.  It surprises me that I am so far behind with my photo albums!  I used to be meticulous about printing all my pictures and getting them in albums right away.  Now I'm almost three years behind and can't even begin to think about printing pictures and trying to put them in albums.  Everything is on the computer but I really want something tangible that I can hold and look at and show to my kids when they're older.  I'm just going to have to make myself do it somehow, a little bit at a time so it's not so overwhelming.

In the meantime, I have sporadic updates here on my blog.  Maybe I'll print these out and make a book someday...

I am still blown away everyday by Jasper.  I am still in awe of the human body for being able to grow a perfect little baby inside of you and then they come out and continue to grow and mature into actual people!!  Jasper's comprehension and comments on life are incredible.  He is smart and funny and sweet and such a joy to be around...most of the time...except when we're reminded that he's in the terrible two's!  At times "NO!" is the only word that Jasper will say and he'll stomp his feet and cry because things are not exactly the way he wants them (he has very specific ideas about how things should be!).  He likes to change his mind a lot and then gets mad when I don't know what he wants.

Jasper "Want apple juice in blue cup with green top, please Mama!"
Me "apple juice in a blue cup? here you go!"
Jasper "NOOOOO!  Orange juice in green cup!!"
Me "but you asked for apple juice in a blue cup!  Ok, are you sure, orange juice in green cup?"
Jasper "No!  Apple juice!!!!"

And sometimes that goes back and forth several more times.  It can be slightly frustrating.  It's a good thing he does so many amazingly cute and awesome things to make up for it!  His vocabulary is pretty great.  He likes to narrate everything that is going on and he makes observations on the world around him.
"Light turned green, green means go, go go! Blue car on, blue car going uphill.  White truck passing blue car.  Jasper playing with green car.  Jasper wearing brown pants and blue shirt.  Mama has pink shirt on.  Mama and Jasper sitting together on brown couch, Mama on right side and Jasper on left side..."  And he'll just continue on in this stream of consciousness!  I love it!

Everyone who meets him comments on what a cool, laid back personality he has and on how smart he is.  I know every parent thinks their kid is a genius, but I have to say, Jasper really is pretty smart.  He is so inquisitive.  He always wants to know how things work and what they do and why.  He takes everything apart and puts them back together.

I feel like I never spend enough time with him. No matter what, it's never enough. Time is passing so quickly and I feel like I miss too much of it.

My parrot

Jasper says more and more everyday.  He's like my own personal parrot.  Anything I say, I hear repeated right back to me!  ie:  I say "Reilly, finish your homework now, please" and Jasper says "homework now please!"  and while Reilly does his homework, Jasper likes to be set up at the table with a paper and pencil so he can do his homework too!

A few things he's come up with on his own...
"Jasper get Reilly's blanket"
"I see a cup"
"Bubbles, water, bath go bye bye!"
"Mama, light on please!"

He's differentiating between things too,
black car, blue car
big bus, little bus
whisper, shout

The other day Jasper looked outside and saw Tim's car and he said "Papa's car!"  He paused for a moment and then said "Papa's here!"  His deductive reasoning skills are great...I love that he's able to figure things out like that!

Carrying his new Elmo doll and wearing Mama's shoes yesterday!
I was finally able to get a video of him saying "mamasita!"...

playground take 2

These pictures were taken last year right around this time at the same playground we were at today.  I had to take a look back and see how far we've come since then!!

Playground fun!

We went to the playground today and Jasper started to pick up garbage that he saw on the ground and put it in the garbage can!  What a good boy!

We got Froggie and it's time to go home!

After we got home he wanted to put on "Mama's jacket" and he had a hard time finding his hand!

A couple days ago, after taking my seat at the kitchen table, Jasper started saying "mama's seat, mama's seat" so I said "Mamacita!" and he thought it was funny so he started saying it.  Then he said "Jaspersita!  Papasita!  Reillysita!" and giggled and giggled. The next day he added in "Grandpasita" and "baby Bensita!"  I'm trying to get a video of it but he doesn't always like to perform on command!

Jasper's talking!

Yes it has been a million years since I've posted anything but I was just reminded how much I like my blog.  Facebook has kind of taken over because I could post pictures and updates and everyone could see them, but I don't have the same sort of "diary" feel that a blog does.  I don't sit and write my thoughts and ideas on facebook, so maybe there's a way to do both!  I'll have to work on it.

A couple months ago I started typing up a list of Jasper's first words.  The list is pretty long by now and there are so many more words that I haven't added on. A couple weeks ago Jasper started putting together 2-3 words and on 9/10/10, Jasper said his first sentence!

I'm amazed by how much he knows and how much vocabulary he has.  Everyday he says something new and makes new connections.  What a smarty!!

I'm incredibly far behind in uploading pictures from the whole summer.  At some point I'll go through and post some more.  Here's one from a few weeks ago:

new discoveries

The other day Jasper was trying to climb up onto the couch which is still a little too high for him.  He started to get a little frustrated and then pulled a couple of pillows onto the floor, climbed up onto the pillows and then up onto the couch.  He looked at me with this huge smile and was so proud of himself.  I couldn't believe he figured out how to do that on his own.  So now, whenever he tries to climb up and can't do it, I just remind him that he knows what to do and then he puts the pillows on the floor again!  Amazing!

Hanging with Reilly on a lazy Saturday morning in their cozy pajamas...

Jasper insisted on wearing his hat for hours the other day.  He never liked wearing a hat before, but now it makes him very happy to put his hat on.  Also, very often he will take Tim's baseball cap and put it on my head.  I guess he likes it on me better!  I'll take it off and put it on the floor and Jasper will pick it up and put it back on my head, over and over!  Then he'll adjust it for me, turn it a little to the side, pull it down more over my eyes and he loves it!

Jasper tries a bagel for the first time and discovers that bagels are super awesome.  I remember some very cute pictures of my niece, Zoe, eating a bagel for the first time at just about the same age.  I guess it runs in the family :)  Jasper has 6 teeth now, 2 on the bottom and 4 on top) and he's tearing through everything.  Whatever we are eating, he wants it!  He's doing pretty well although he does tend to bite off more than he can chew and then he'll gag for a second and cough up whatever he couldn't chew well enough and then ask for more food!  He's learning though.

I realized that I never took any bath pictures before and I decided that it was time to finally have some!  Here are a few from bath time a couple days ago.  He seems to really want to eat his rubber ducky...you'd think we never feed this kid!

Just some fun time with Mama!

We've been reading a lot lately and what he's been doing is giving me his favorite books and when we get to his favorite pages, he takes the book from me and starts licking the page, I guess to show his appreciation!  It's so funny!

Thanksgiving!

Last year at Thanksgiving...

This year at Thanksgiving...

What a difference a year makes!  We had a wonderful Thanksgiving, so far.  Part 1 was at my parents' house yesterday.  Great food and great company!  Tonight we're going for part 2 to my mother in laws' for Thanksgiving leftovers.  And still more to come this weekend...

Jasper's First Birthday!!!

3 weeks ago, Jasper turned 1.  How is that possible?  In the couple weeks leading up to his birthday, I was feeling very nostalgic and sentimental, thinking about first bringing Jasper home from the hospital and what it was like to just hold him in my arms  and have him sleep on my chest all the time.  I was thinking of how little he was and how new everything was and how tired I was!!  :)  It was such a different time from where we are now.  He's all of a sudden such a little person!  His walking ability makes a big difference because now he's able to do what he wants and go where he wants.  He's so much more independent!  He's walking just about all the time, but every now and then he'll still crawl somewhere.  Mostly he walks, he squats down to pick things up and then stands up again, he navigates around things and changes directions well.  He's gotten tall and much leaner, although there's still plenty of cheeks to pinch!  He's very adventurous.  He loves to climb.  He's curious about everything and really looks at everything and everyone around him and takes it all in.  He's the most good natured child, happy all the time, friendly and smart.  He's always able to put a smile on my face!

What a big boy!!

Playing with Mama:

Making faces with Papa:

"A cake for me?"

The obligatory 1st birthday messy cake picture:

I've also been noticing in the last couple of weeks that his comprehension has gone way up.  If I say where's the ball?  He looks around, finds the ball and then goes and gets it!  If I say a line from a book or the title of a book, he goes and finds that book and brings it to me. He's spending a lot more time sitting in my lap and reading books and he has definite favorite books as well as favorite pages within the books.  He'll open a book up to the same page and insist that I read that page over and over.  He's not interested in the rest of the story, he just wants that page again and again.  It's so funny!

He's also really developing his sense of humor.  He likes to be silly and when he knows he's being silly he looks at us with a big grin waiting for our reaction.  He'll turn his pacifier upside down and then turn to us so we can see his silliness and then he giggles and turns it back the right way.  He copies facial expressions and movements that we do.  He loves clapping and playing peek a boo, hiding under a blanket and then revealing himself is one of his favorite activites.

He's all of a sudden much more interested in real food.  He's been pretty much sticking to jars of baby food and any time we tried anything that he even slightly needed to chew, he would gag and spit up, including the puffs that just dissolve and cheerios.  We started giving him the teething biscuits (that's what he is eating in the picture below) and he loved them and I guess he got the hang of chewing.  All of a sudden he started reaching for whatever we were eating...cereal (he's enjoyed bowls of cheerios and milk), tacos (soft tortillas with fake meat filling), french toast, scrambled eggs, grilled cheese, quesadillas and yesterday we discovered he's a big fan of crackers and cranberry sauce!  Now he's eating everything!  It's so great to see him exploring and discovering what to do and what he likes!  He still not doing much self feeding, other than the teething biscuits.  If we put puffs or cheerios in front of him he'll pick them up and throw them on the floor, but he won't eat them.  However, if we feed him from a spoon (especially if it's a grown up spoon, not his spoon) he's happy to eat them.  He'll get the hang of feeding himself eventually!

It took a long time for me to be ready to stop nursing him during the night.  He was waking up a once or twice a night (or sometimes more) up until a couple months ago when we decided he was ready to sleep through the night...and so were we!  It wasn't so much that he was hungry, but when he woke up, he wanted soothing to get back to sleep.  I kept feeling that it was easier to just get up and nurse him for a few minutes then he'd go right back to sleep and so would I.  He had no trouble falling asleep at night or for naptime, so we decided to cut back on the night feedings and see if he could just fall back asleep on his own, without nursing.  He adjusted very quickly and within just a few days, he realized there was no reason to wake up if he wasn't getting fed and cuddled so he might as well keep sleeping!  He's pretty much slept through the night every night since then.  Once or twice he's woken up, if there was extreme teething pain or something, but he's become a great sleeper.  He still takes two naps a day (1-2 hours each) and then sleeps for about 11 hours each night.  I'm still not sleeping through the night all the time.  My body is having a hard time readjusting.  I've been so used to waking up through the night that now it's hard to stay sleeping!  Eventually my body will figure it out.

He's got a few words these days, but still mostly babbling.  There are certain sounds that we're able to translate to mean real things, ie: ma=more, ba=ball.  He's starting to be able to communicate what he wants and how he's feeling, just like a real person!!  Every day something new develops and I'm so happy and proud to see how he's developing.
And, last week to show how grown up he is, we went to get his first haircut! He did pretty well, although he got a bit antsy toward the end.  I loved all the little curls he was getting, but his hair was always in his face so we decided it was time.  Of course, in my opinion, he's still pretty darn adorable.

Halloween

Halloween already feels like so long ago, but I wanted to put up a few pictures.  We had a great time on Halloween.  Reilly went to a Halloween party with Aunt Betsy (Tim was working) and Reilly and I stayed home for the afternoon.  We played out in the leaves and watched the neighborhood kids trick or treating.  After Tim got home from work, we went to my mother in laws house and went trick or treating in her neighborhood, which we've done every year for a while now.  I'd say it was a very successful 1st Halloween for Jasper!
